A conversation as an artwork

October 2015

Many artists preceded us. For example Joseph Beuys. At the time he questioned the way democracy could be renewed, how to vitalize the conversation. He called it Direct Democracy. At the Biennale in Venice he sat at a table with two chairs and initiated conversations with visitors. In a way we do the same.

We use theater to not just watch but act, to face the conversation. It takes courage to participate. We ask the audience/the participant a considerable engagement. And I think this engagement is ultimately necessary nowadays. To engage and to participate. To be there. And not just watch.

Be there: Building Conversation on the pavement of the Rotterdamse Schouwburg: eighteen conversations in the heart of Rotterdam.
