Building Conversation

In the summer of 2013, theater maker Lotte van den Berg and visual artist Daan ‘t Sas began developing Building Conversation. Driven by a keen interest in conversation techniques from different cultures and a curiosity about the workings of conversation as a place for encounter, they embarked on a research project with the central question: “How do we talk to each other and how could we talk to each other?”

Building Conversation grew into a collective of artists who approach conversation as a work of art, as a joint creation, a collective improvisation in which the audience is invited to participate. The conversations are inspired by conversation rituals from around the world.

After countless performative conversations at home and abroad, inspiring collaborations, and constant self-reflection, Building Conversation underwent a major change in 2023. Lotte van den Berg is currently no longer working for Building Conversation. She completed her work for Building Conversation at the end of 2022 with the book Building Conversation – The Scripts, which she edited together with Peter Aers and Sodja Lotker.

‘Is it still theatre then? Surely it is. Yet the firm affirmation requires us to rethink what constitutes theatre in the first place. For Van den Berg, theatre is a place for exercising togetherness and for acquiring the skills to do so.’ Liesbeth Groot Nibbelink
